Description
Spanish nobility reported finding Dahlia plants growing in Mexico in 1525, but the earliest known description is by Francisco Hernndez, physician to Philip II, who was ordered to visit Mexico in 1570 to study the "natural products of that country". Hernandez described two varieties of dahlias (the pinwheel-like Dahlia pinnata and the huge Dahlia imperialis) as well as other medicinal plants of New Spain.
