Description
The origin of the stars and stripes design of the USA flag is inadequately documented. A story credits Betsy Ross for sewing the first flag from a pencil sketch handed to her by George Washington. One famous arrangement features 13 outwardly-oriented five-pointed stars arranged in a circle, the so-called Betsy Ross flag. It is said that that the flag of the thirteen United States was first hoisted in June 1777 by the Continental Army at the Middlebrook encampment. The first official US flag flown during battle was on August 3, 1777 at Fort Schuyler (Fort Stanwix) during the Siege of Fort Stanwix.
In 1795, the number of stars and stripes was increased from 13 to 15. It was the 15-star, 15-stripe flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write "Defense of Fort McHenry," later known as "The Star-Spangled Banner", which is now the American national anthem. This is a replica of that flag as it is flown from the mast head of a tall ship moored in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, Maryland.
This great example of Americana is suitable for almost any decor.
